Featured Artist - Dorothy Napangardi

DOROTHY NAPANGARDIWe are featuring Artwork by the World renowned Warlpiri artist, Dorothy Robinson Napangardi.

Dorothy Napangardi Robinson was born in the early 1950s in the Mina Mina area of the Tanami Desert, about 400km North West of Alice Springs.

She began her life living the traditional lifestyle, with no exposure to white civilisation at all until she moved to the settlement of Yuendumu.
She had little formal schooling, but was instructed in the historic Dreaming of her people. It was here in around 1987, that Dorothy began painting.

The rendition of her paintings is characterised by the way she minimises all references to the customary Aboriginal iconography. Topographically, Dorothy's artworks refer to the sacred site of Mina Mina, which is made up of two enormous soakage areas that rarely fill with water and exist as clay pans.

As water soaks into the ground, small areas of earth dry out and life at the edges, becoming delineated by salt.

In 2001 Dorothy won the prestigious Telstra Art Award and is represented in many major public and private collections worldwide.

Dorothy is like family and over the course of 2012 she has spent many extended residencies with Desert Art Centre and has just completed 6 weeks with her sister Margaret Lewis Napangardi. One of the artworks created by Dorothy during this stay is presented below. At 300 x190 cm it is a stunning and imposing rendition of her Dreamtime Story 'Mina Mina Sand Hills'
